Press Release - March 24, 1989 Range Rover : - Introduces Range Rover "County" Range Rover introduces "County" at - Greater New York International Automobile Show 1989 Range Rover of North America, Inc. will unveil the most luxurious version ever of the legendary 4x4 at the Greater New York International Automobile Show. The "County", named for the affluent lifestyle it defines in Range Rover's native England, embodies all of the rugged durability, luxury features and incomparable ride that Americans have come to love in the Range Rover since its March, 1987 U.S. introduction. When it is available through Range Rover's 63-dealer network in late March, the County's extensive list of standard features will offer its discriminating owners instant recognition through distinctive badging and exterior colours. Two unique new micatallic paints, Trocadero Red and Cairngorm Brown will be available along with elegant Beluga Black. Colour-matched wheels, chrome bumpers and custom coachlines complete the look. The County is the world's only 4x4 to have as standard a six-cartridge CD player/tape deck/AM-FM radio with remote control. Also inside will be found Connolly leather seating, electric sunroof, additional burl walnut interior trim, deep-pile carpet mats and enhanced night driving convenience through an auto dimming rearview mirror. "County, the most luxurious Range Rover available anywhere in the world, sets a new benchmark," said Charles R. Hughes, president, Range Rover of North America, Inc. "This vehicle is only the latest step in our total commitment to provide high quality vehicles with long-term value for American buyers." The County model joins the standard 1989 Range Rover which is the most powerful version of the luxury sport/utility vehicle engineered to date. Both are powered by aluminum alloy V-8 engines that produce 178 bhp and 220 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm. Operation of the Borg-Warner two-speed transfer case is smoother and easier. A viscous coupling in the permanent four-wheel drive system provides optimum traction and four-wheel drive control. Named "Four Wheeler of the Year" by America's largest 4x4 enthusiast magazine, FOUR WHEELER, the British-built Range Rover topped a field of 10 pick-up trucks and sport/utilities by the largest point margin in the history of the competition. The manufacturer's suggested retail price for the County, which has no factory options, is $43,100. The suggested retail price for the standard Range Rover is $35,800. Range Rover of North America, Inc. is a part of the Land Rover Group of companies, Solihull, England. More information is available by calling 1-800 FINE 4WD. Range Rover of North America, Inc.: The reputation and sales of the British-built Range Rover have been growing and prospering since the luxury sport/utility's introduction to the American market in March 1987. The permanent four-wheel drive vehicle is currently available through a 63-dealer network that is scheduled to increase to 75 by 1990. Sales of the Range Rover totalled 3,427 in 1988, exceeding 1987 results by more than 32%. Monthly sales records were set by the company last December and in January of this year. "Response to our 1989 model and its many improvements has been outstanding," said Charles R. Hughes, president, Range Rover of North America, Inc. The 1989 model incorporates more than 30 engineering and design changes to meet tastes of American drivers. The new version boasts a 3.9 litre, 178 bhp, aluminum alloy V-8 engine that reaches 60 mph in 10.9 seconds. For off-road driving, the shift from the high-gear range to low has been made smoother and easier through a new, quiet chain-driven transfer case and viscous coupling in the permanent four-wheel drive system. Comfort and convenience features include newly designed interior door panels, a pushbutton release for the fold-down rear seats and remote locking of the rear hatch. The vehicle comes in new colors, inside and out. Eastnor Green is added to the external color choices for the aluminum body, while additional interior choices are Brogue (tan) and Highland (grey) for the fabric interior and Sorrell (tan) and Winchester (grey) for the optional leather interior. Manufacturer's suggested retail price for the 1989 Range Rover is $35,800 with two options, leather upholstery ($1,125) and electrically operated sunroof ($1,375). In early Spring, a new model combining all of the features and reliability of the Range Rover with even more luxurious appointments was introduced. The "County", available in three exclusive colors (Beluga Black, Cairngorm Brown and Trocadero Red) incorporates leather seating and electric sunroof as standard features. A specially designed stereo system with six-disc remote cartridge, compact disc player with wireless remote control is featured along with custom coachlining, deep-pile carpet mats, additional burl walnut interior trim and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The suggested price for the County, which has no factory options, is $43,100. "This is the most luxurious, well-equipped Range Rover available in the world. It was developed in response to requests from our dealers, based on input from their customers," noted Hughes. The world-renowned Range Rover has achieved considerable recognition during its two years on the American market. FOUR WHEELER magazine named the 1989 model as the winner in its 16th annual "Four Wheeler of the Year" contest. The Range Rover topped a field of 10 pick-up trucks and sport/utilities by the largest point margin ever in the 16 year history of the competition. Dealers are also pleased with the vehicle and the company. For the second straight year Range Rover scored in the top two among 36 manufacturers polled on sales and service support, vehicle supply and business terms in the 1988 J.D. Power Dealer Attitude Survey. "We are proud to have won high marks from our dealers here in the U.S.," Hughes concluded. "We continually strive to produce a quality product and responsive programs for this discriminating market." Range Rover of North America, Inc. is a part of the Land Rover Group of companies.
